It occurs in all communities, within all cultural groups and all classes.
In Canada today there are 4% to 15% of seniors who are being mistreated in some form or another.
What can contribute to the vulnerability and to mistreatment of elders in the cultural communities?
- Little or no knowledge of French or English
- Financial and social dependency.
- Cultural values and identity that are very different from that of the mainstream culture.
- Lack of knowledge of their rights and the resources available to them.
- Overburdened caregivers.
