In Quebec, between 38,000 and 145,000 seniors are victims of abuse, neglect or abuse, often by a relative or family member.

Actions that result in the physical, psychological and financial exploitation of an elder.

What do we know about Elder Abuse?
We know that it is considered the most hidden form of family violence.
It occurs in all communities, within all cultural groups and all classes.
In Canada today there are 4% to 15% of seniors who are being mistreated in some form or another.

What can contribute to the vulnerability and to mistreatment of elders in the cultural communities?

  • Little or no knowledge of French or English
  • Financial and social dependency.
  • Cultural values and identity that are very different from that of the mainstream culture.
  • Lack of knowledge of their rights and the resources available to them.
  • Isolation.
  • Overburdened caregivers.
